The billion-dollar esports industry is now home to some of the biggest sponsors in the world and elite-class players. Major game developers like Valve and Blizzard have been hosting events and competitions for years with prizes reaching millions of dollars. With esports fans and professional players accumulating by the minute, esports has become one of the fastest-growing sports in the world. 

Here are some of the most highly anticipated events of the year.

Call of Duty League

Activision Blizzard has launched the first-ever Call of Duty League last weekend, on January 24 – its second professional league after the Overwatch League. The multi-million dollar franchised esports league is comprised of 12 professional teams representing 11 markets in Europe and the US. The most elite esports players in the world will be battling for the Championship on PlayStation4, in 5-vs-5 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare multiplayer matches. 

Dota 2- The International 

Dota 2 is the highest paying game in the world of esports with last year’s prize pot reaching $ 34 million. This year marks the 10th annual edition of The International and the concluding tournament of Dota Pro Circuit 2019-20, which will be held at Ericsson Globe Arena, Stockholm. Worlds 2020 – League of Legends 

The Worlds 2020 League of Legends (LoL) esports season will conclude in China this year. A total of 24 teams are competing for the Summoner’s Cup and a multimillion-dollar prize pool yet to be announced. Hosted by Riot Games, the Championship will take place across 6 different cities in China reaching finals at the Shanghai Stadium. According to digital streaming data, the League of Legends Championship was the most-watched esports game of 2019, with over 137 million hours total watch time. 

BlizzCon 2020

One of the biggest annual gaming conventions in the world is organized every year by Blizzard Entertainment to promote their flagship games which include Diablo, World of Warcraft, Overwatch, and Hearthstone. Since the first convention in 2005, all conventions are held at the Anaheim Center in California. The event hosts gaming tournaments, cosplay competitions, merch marketplace, game previews, and so much more. Stay tuned for the official dates. 

Overwatch World Cup 

The Overwatch World Cup is hosted at BlizzCon in Anaheim, California, every year. It is organized in 3 stages: preliminary where any national can participate, group stage, and playoffs. Last year, Team USA won the World Cup against Team South Korea in front of thousands of BlizzCon enthusiasts.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Major Championships 

These global biannual tournaments, also known as “Majors” are the most prestigious tournaments of the Global Offensive scene. The 1st Major for this year will take place in Rio de Janeiro at Jeunesse Arena and will be hosted by ESL, the largest esports organizer worldwide. Founded in 2013 it now features 24 teams and a prize pool of $ 1 million. 

The Hearthstone World Championship

Another world championship organized by Blizzard Entertainment. The Masters Tour 2020 is a 3-day event that will take place at the Esports Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Qualified players will join some of the best in the world and fight for a share of the $ 250,000 prize pool. 

The Evolution (Evo) Championship Series 

The largest and most fierce fighting game tournament in the world is open to anyone, bringing together the best players in the genre from all around the world. Held in various venues across Las Vegas since 2002, it features games like “Street Fighter 5” and “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate The first-ever Japanese edition of the event (Evo Japan) was held in Japan in 2018.
